Course Description
Didactic (Online)
This course is designed for individuals who meet one of the following criteria and are needing dental radiography certification:
- Currently working in a dental office
- New to NC whose former state’s requirement does not meet NC requirements (may or may not be employed)
- Students who have applied to dental school and/or have plans to work in a dental office before entering dental school
The Intraoral Radiography Certificate Course consists of two components; Part 1 is an online self-study designed to teach the fundamentals of x-ray production, safety and protection. This portion constitutes 22 hours of instruction. Part 2 requires 8 hours (1 day) of hands-on clinical instruction designed to teach receptor placement and exposure techniques needed for successful dental imaging. Both Part 1 and Part 2 give a total of 30 contact hours and must be successfully completed prior to receiving certification in Dental Radiography.
Clinical (Face-to-Face)
Part 2 requires 8 hours (1 day) of hands-on clinical instruction designed to teach receptor placement and exposure techniques needed for successful dental imaging. Both Part 1 and Part 2 must be successfully completed prior to receiving certification in Dental Radiography. You must complete part 1 prior to registering for part 2.
Course Instructors
The ECU School of Dental Medicine is pleased to welcome Ms. Jennifer Robertson, MEd, BSDH, RDH, CDA, who joined the school in 2024, and the Radiology Team in 2025, as our Dental Radiology Technologist Specialist. Ms. Robertson has been a Certified Dental Assistant since 2003 and a Registered Dental Hygienist since 2005. A dedicated dental educator since 2004, she has taught in both dental assisting and dental hygiene programs. Throughout her career, she has instructed numerous courses, including Dental Radiography, with a strong emphasis on fostering clinical excellence and safe patient care. Ms. Robertson looks forward to teaching in both portions of the Intraoral Radiography Certificate Program, where she will continue to emphasize radiation safety, proper technique, and the development of learner confidence.
Ms. Penny Coates, BS, RDH began working with the Radiology Team at ECU School of Dental Medicine in May 2022. During that time, she has assisted in teaching Part II of the Intraoral Radiography Certificate Program. With over 40 years of experience in the dental field, she brings an exceptional depth of clinical and educational expertise. She practiced as a Registered Dental Hygienist for 30 years in Goldsboro, NC for Hinnant Family Dentistry. She also served as an educator in the dental hygiene program at Wayne Community College for 20 years. During her years at the community college, she taught Dental Radiology full-time for eight years, helping students develop the skills necessary for accurate and safe radiographic imaging.
The ECU School of Dental Medicine recently welcomed Dr. Shelby Chadwick, DRS, MEd, BS, CDA, as a part of the Radiology Team. With over 50 years of experience in the dental field, she brings a wealth of knowledge in both clinical practice and dental education. For more than 25 years, she worked full-time in private practice as a Certified Dental Assistant, where she gained extensive experience exposing radiographs on patients and providing comprehensive clinical support. She then spent another 25 years as a full-time educator at a community college, teaching dental assisting students the principles and techniques of radiographic imaging. She has taught the Intraoral Radiography Certificate Program for office trained dental assistants many times as well. She looks forward to sharing her expertise to those enrolled in the Part II of the Intraoral Radiography Certificate Program.
