GLASSBOWL-Glass Bowl - Glassblowing Experience- Make a Floppy Bowl
Course Description
The floppy bowl, also called wavy, fluted, and handkerchief bowls, is a fun form that is long established in the history of blown glass. Still popular in the present day, Roman examples exist that date to at least the 3rd century CE.
In this three-hour workshop, you will get the chance to create your own. Molten glass will be gathered from a 2100°F furnace and participants will get to apply and melt in their choice of glass colors chunks (called 'frits'). You will then be guided and assisted by the instructor through the process of inflating a bubble, shaping it, and ultimately opening and spinning it to create the distinctive 'floppy' shape.
To finish your piece, it will be knocked off the pipe and the instructors will place the piece in a 900-degree oven to anneal.
To prevent it from cracking, glass must be cooled slowly for at least 12 hours. Artwork made during a glass class must cool in an annealing oven and will be available for pick-up at a later date.
