Course Description

This online module is designed to increase your expertise in culturally responsive literacy instruction and to help you find comfort in choosing and teaching quality literature that provides windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors (Bishop, 1990) for students in K-12 classrooms. Participants will learn why it is important to have diverse books in K-12 classrooms, how to choose quality diverse texts, criteria to consider when evaluating diverse books, as well as strategies and activities to help you incorporate these texts into your curriculum. Each lesson contains a plethora of resources: articles, videos, and web content to help you gain a deeper understanding of diverse literature, how it impacts students, and where you can find quality examples. While the course is mostly self-paced, a few check-ins and due dates will help you stay on track and get the most out of this online course.

Technology Requirements

  • The ability to send and receive email with and without attachments
  • Use a word processing program such as Microsoft Word
  • Stable Internet connection
  • View video clips from YouTube and other video streaming website

On the 6th of each month registrants should look for a couple of emails which will include login instructions and a link to the online classroom, Canvas. If the 6th falls on a weekend or holiday, registrants will receive login information on the following business day.
